INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL - 2010
FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS
AND ANTHROPOGENIC IMPACT. LAKE LADOGA

International Summer School 2010 "Freshwater ecosystems under natural conditions and anthropogenic impact. Lake Ladoga" was succesfully held on 28, July till 9, August 2010. The Summer School was organized by Department of Applied Ecology, staff of Education and Scientific Station "Valaam" and International Relations Office of RSHU. The Summer School gathered students from diffrent countries studing freshwater ecosystems problems.

As long as 2 weeks students were learning more about particularities of Valaam Archipelago freshwater ecosystem, familiarizing with the limnogenesis types of North Russia water bodies, using as an example the water system of the Valaam Archipelago (Lake Ladoga), studing a range of natural fluctuations of the limnological parameters within which the normal regime of ecosystem functioning is maintained, connection between the main limnological parameters on the basis of the field materials collected, cobcidering the idea about the lake being a important component of the landscape, comparing the great lakes and small one (Lake Ladoga case study).

St. Petersburg (RSHU) and Education and Scientific Station of RSHU (Lake Ladoga, Valaam Island), the main objectives of which are:

1) monitoring of the coastal zone and the small forest lakes of the Valaam Archipelago for the purpose of supplying material for courses in natural sciences;
2) scientific research at the Valaam Archipelago, Ladoga Lake and the northern Ladoga region with participation of students and post-graduate students;
3) the organisation of field practice of the University students.

The Summer School has started in Russian State Hydrometeorological University where students had a short introductory course, visited St. Petersburg Dam where they learned more about current ecological situation of the Neva Bay and the Gulf of Finland and Water Museum of St. Petersburg.

Then there was a captivating trip to Valaam Island where Education and Scientific Station "Valaam" is located. The Station lies in the south-western part of Valaam Island, on the very shore of Lake Ladoga, far from the touristic routes, in the midst of a valuable coniferous forest, which is very interesting from scientific viewpoint.

The purposes of the station are the field practice of the students of the University; ecological, geographical and biological scientific research; a complex monitoring of the coastal zone of the Valaam Archipelago, the small forest lakes and some forest areas of Valaam Island. We have been conducting ecological monitoring of the coastal zone of Lake Ladoga since 1998, and have accumulated a considerable experience in the study of Lake Ladoga and the small lakes of the Archipelago.

Participants of the Summer School 2010 were involved in plenty of activities at Valaam Island: field investigations comprise the study of morphometric parameters, thermal regime, basic hydrochemical, hydrophysical parameters, phytoplankton, zooplankton, macrophytes, macrozoobenthos and the primary production of plankton.

As results of practical course at the Valaam station students have succesfully prepared oral presentations on their researches, received certificates with excellent mark and 4 ECTS credits according to the academic program of the Summer School 2010.
