Summer practice

Every year more and more students of the Russian State Hydrometeorological University participate in different international activities: study abroad, student exchange programmes.
This summer RSHU and the University of Helsinki organized summer practice for 2nd,3d and 4th-year students studing Hydrometeorology at eurogroups.
There were 3 summer courses during August.

The first course: Aerosols formation and growth
Dates: August 4—14
Location: Hyytiala Forestry Field Station

Topics:
• Atmospheric aerosols
• Atmospheric aerosol formation, observations
• Activation, nano-Kohler
• Meteorology behind atmospheric aerosol formation
• Ion induced nucleation
• Nucleation experiments
• Instrumentation, cluster, ion and aerosol measurements
• Thermodynamics and condensation
• Atmospheric chemistry behind aerosol formation
• Coagulation, General Dynamic Equation (GDE)
• Cluster and ion dynamics
• Hygroscopic growth
• Global models
• Organic aerosol
• Biosphere-aerosol-cloud-climate interaction
• Processes in the biosphere related to atmospheric aerosol formation

The second course: Introduction to atmosphere-biosphere studies
Dates: August 17—23
Location: Hyytiala Forestry Field Station

Topics:
• Basic concepts in aerosol physics, meteorology, atmospheric
chemistry and ecosystem analysis
• Atmospheric aerosols
• Anthropogenic and biogenic VOCs
• Carbon cycle, Eddy covariance
• Research and measurements in Nordic and Baltic field stations
• Visit to SMEAR II station
• Climatology, global climate change
• Revision of the basic thermodynamics
• Atmospheric new particle formation
• Health effects of fine particles
• Cloud physics
• Global and regional atmospheric models

The third course: Field course in micrometeorology and hydrology
Dates: August 25—29
Location: Hyytiala Forestry Field Station

The topics of the course include:
• Micrometeorology
• Hydrology
• Gas exchange between the ecosystem and atmosphere

Our students have learned a lot about different processes in the atmosphere and hydrosphere, met international students and teachers, and they had a good experience in English also.
After their arrival in Saint-Petersburg they shared impressions with us.

Elena Nazarova, 3d-year student:

At first we arrived in Helsinki then we went to Hyytiala by bus. Our course coordinator was Antti Lauri, he has met us just at the Helsinki railway station.
We received a program of the summer course and got some new information on our accommodation which was very good.
Our classes started at 8:30 a.m. and ended at 8:00 p.m. Breakfast, lunch meals and coffee breaks were so tasty there!
The first lecture «Atmospheric aerosols» was given by Prof. Markku Kulmala, Head of Department of Physics at the University of Helsinki.
We were divided in 5 small training groups.
On weekend, we visited ‘Ahtorin Eloinpuisto’,one of the first zoo in Finland.
At the free time we played tennis, football and swam nearby lake. I hope that we visit Hyytiala again.

Angelina Bandeeva, 4th-year student:
We have participated in course 'Introduction to atmosphere-biosphere studies'.
During 4 days we have been listening lectures at the University of Helsinki. During free time we were walking around the city centre and taking a lot of photos. Then we were at Hyytiala forestry field station for 2 days. Also we have visited meteorological station SMEAR II where a lot of professors and students from different universities conduct their research projects.
At the end of the course we've passed an oral exam and received certificates with 3 ECTS.

Anna Filippenko, 3d-year student:
Summer 'Field course in micrometeorology and hydrology' started on 25, August, all students gathered in a hall of A-Building of Hyytiala forestry field station and discussed ahead work.
We were divided in 6 groups, each group was in charge of their measuring data, instruments and devices.
On the next day we installed our equipment and calibrated some devices. Every day we visited Siikaneva wetland and conducted some experiments there. Then we made an analysis of the data obtained and a short presentation about the results.
At our free time we visited sauna, swam nearby lake, walked in a forest and picked mushrooms.
Till now we are full of impressions and positive emotions, and we met new friends also.
