Eco-friendly dredging in the modern worldCentral Dredging Association (CEDA, Netherlands), Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) and Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University (SPbSPU) have organized an international seminar "Eco-friendly dredging in the modern world", which was held in Saint-Petersburg on 13th and 14th of October.The seminar was organized in cooperation with Committee of Nature Use, Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety and was devoted to discussion the environmental aspects of dredging. Since the times of Peter I the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea plays an important role for Russia. It is a link between economic spaces of the Russian Federation and the European Union, providing the main sea transport routes, which connect Russia with European, American and African markets. The development of port infrastructure, 2 large-scale engineer projects, is beeing carried out in the russian sector of the Gulf of Finland which influence the whole ecosystem of the eastern part of the Gulf. All the dredging works should be accomponied by ecological monitoring and Environmental Impact Assessment. As a result of the Seminar, the methods of dredging impact estimation with respect to coastal ecosystems were developed and accepted as a guiding and directing document. The program of the Seminar was duscussed and planned this winter and spring during the visits of CEDA experts to Russian State Hydrometeorological University. It included presentation of russian experts and firms which connected to dredging works and more than 10 presentations by european experts. In the framework of the Seminar program the Technical Visit to Flood protection barrier (FPB) was organized. Very important part of the Seminar was a special presentation of the new book "Environmental Aspects of Dredging" edited by Nick Bray. The book presentation was held in Conference Hall of RSHU.
